After adding OpenShop my news module displayed as a verticle list, which meant that I had to re-arrange my home layout. It'd be great if we could have a horizontal layout option :)

Yes, there is no horisontal option for news.
By the way, you can restore your old news module from backups. It should work good with OpenShop.
